スティーリー・ダンの「Only a Fool Would Say That」はジョン・レノンのイマジンへの強烈な皮肉が込められた曲である。

スティーリー・ダンの1972年の作品『Can’t Buy A Thrill』に入っているボサノバ風の小曲「Only a Fool Would Say That」というのがある。Midnite CruiserとReelin’ In The Yearsという名曲に挟まれていたこともあり、これまで、あまり特に関心を持って聴いたこともなかった。しかし、これが、ジョン・レンンのイマジンへの強烈な皮肉が込められた曲であることを知った。その歌詞は次の通りである。

Wearing a white Stetson hat

ここの「A world become one」はレノンのImagineの最後の歌詞「And the world will live as one」にかけている。「a white Stetson hat」（白いカウボーイ・ハット）を被っているジョン・レノンは記憶になかったのだが、そういう写真は存在した。(

ジョン・レノンは若い頃は、スティーリー・ダンのドナルド・フェイゲン並みの皮肉屋で、社会批判も鋭かった。ビートルズの初期のジョンの曲の歌詞は、オブラートに包まれた毒舌のようなものが調味料に含まれていて、それがビートルズの魅力に寄与していたことは間違いない。Nowhere Man, Doctor Robert, Get Back, Sexie Sadieなど、後半期においてもひねりが効いた歌が多い。そのジョン・レノンを「Only a fool」とドナルド・フェイゲンに言われてしまうとは、なんたる転落、とも思わなくもないが、確かにドナルド・フェイゲンの指摘に首肯する人は少なくないだろう。私も中学時代、イマジンを聴いてちょっと偽善的というか、恥ずかしいものを感じたのを記憶している。メロディとか悪くないんだけど、世の中、なかなかそんなに上手くいかないだろうな、と当時も思っていたし、今でもそう思っている。

それはともかく、そういう偽善性に対して、まだ若造のドナルド・フェイゲン、攻撃の矛先を向けるとは大したものである。それも当時、ほとんど神に近かったジョン・レノンに対してである。ほぼ99％、ジョン・レノンの味方をするという状況下での、この批判、その姿勢は天晴れである。
